Econometrics (经济计量学 in Chinese) is different from 数理经济学 (a.k.a. mathematical economics).
Econometrics is a joint field of economics and statistics, which uses statistical techniques to study economic phenomena.
There are not much math in many economic fields, for example, macro/monetary economics. In general, intermediate knowlege about calculus and matrix algebra can help you read most economics papers.
There is a top journal called Econometrica, which publishes many math intensive papers. I guess that is why some people think 数理经济学 is equivalent to econometrics. But that is just simply wrong.
