4.Hardy对于他的数学没有用是比较自豪的。他和Littlewood的合作更加有意思。他们合作的原则是很可以让今天对于排名和优先权斤斤计较的人比较脸红的:
I . When one writes to the other,, it’s completely indifferent whether what they wrote was right or wrong ;
II . When one receives a letter from the other, he is under no obligation whatsoever to read it, let it alone or to answer it ;

哪个圈内圈外的故事见瑞得的Courant
柯朗这家伙会和人打交道，所以很快就混入了那个圈子
后来他对他进去了而Weyl没有进去很得意
不过这也是他的本事，哥廷根的研究所的建立以及new york u的Courant Institute of Mathematics Sciencs的建立跟Courant会和人打交道很有关系，圈的来钱啊
再说一句，Courant是Numerical Solution of P.D.E.的开山鼻祖级人物
差分法解偏微分方程和有限元法解偏微分方程的第一篇文章都是他的手笔
36.西方人学法语的优势更多的是在文化背景方面的，Anglo-Saxon语系和拉丁语系还是有很大区别的。今天常往法国跑的美国数学家里面大概V.Jones的法语说得算是非常不错的，A.Weinstein还马马虎虎。至于那位著名的同性恋者Bryant,他是这么说的，我要是讲法语的话呢，估计你们要花很长很长时间才能理解我说了点什么，但是有一点例外，就是我从做学生的时候开始Cartan的名字就是按法语念的。S.Mandelbrojt后来顶替了Hadamard在College de France的教席。被他击败的是A.Weil.这也成为S.Mandelbrojt最后退出Bourbaki的缘由。
58.关于数学家工资等等，Notice of AMS往往有专文加以分析。
Littlewood教学生的办法比较省事，就是给学生一个难题，但凡活下来的都是好样的。
59.不理解Dreyfus事件就不能算了解19世纪末的法国。中文写的关于这个故事的材料以柏杨先生的大作为最佳。
Bourbaki是个希腊名字，按照该小组中的正宗希腊人Skandalis的说法，他们希望以此体现出数学起源于希腊。至于Nicolas,那是Eveline Weil起的(她的改嫁直接导致Rene de Possel退出Bourbaki).
