这是一首60年代的老歌，内容描绘的是一个赌徒的沉沦和忏悔，旭日旅馆是新奥尔良一家赌场的名字。词曲作者已不可考，不过从松散的歌词来看，显然出自一位民间黑人艺人。民间的黑人艺人向来多才多艺，他们的大多数的编曲和填词带有即兴性质，所以歌词结构比较松散随意。类似的，nirvana的那首大名鼎鼎的“where did you sleep last night”，其作者也是一位黑人。

最初唱响这首歌的是民谣大师bob dylan，不过最受欢迎的版本是由the animals乐队演绎的，这也是我最喜欢的版本。他们的旋律最为流畅，主唱eric burdon的高亢嗓音绝类黑人。比起bob dylan的沙哑低沉，burdon的显得更为有力。

我第一次听到这首歌，是在马丁斯科西斯执导的电影《赌城》中。片子到了结尾，涉嫌操纵赌博业的一大批黑帮骨干分子被暗杀，血淋淋的镜头下响起了这首歌，我们听到了歌者的忏悔：哦妈妈，告诉你的孩子们，不要学我做过的事……扯远点，斯科西斯的电影非常注重背景歌曲的选用，这一特点集中体现在《出租汽车司机》、《纽约，纽约》、《好家伙》以及这部《赌城》中。
